Solar Panel Maintenance in Bournemouth and Poole: What Your System Needs
Last updated: 21 October 2026 | 10 min read | By No1 Solar Care
Most solar systems in the BH postcodes went up between 2010 and 2019, when the Feed-in Tariff was paying people to fit them. That puts a typical Bournemouth or Poole system somewhere between 7 and 16 years old today. The Energy Saving Trust says inverters usually need replacing after about 10 to 12 years, at around £800. Do the sum and plenty of roofs along this coast are approaching the age where the inverter goes first.
Nothing dramatic happens when it does. Output just drifts down, and because the lights still come on and the meter still ticks over, nobody notices for a year or two. We have inspected 500+ systems across the South Coast, and the quiet faults are the expensive ones.
This guide covers what a service involves, what the Bournemouth and Poole environment does to a roof, what it costs, and when to book.
In summary: Solar panels in Bournemouth and Poole need a professional inspection about once a year, a clean when output or visible dirt says so, and an inverter check from year eight. Salt air, gulls and tree shade make the coast harder on kit than inland Dorset. A full service (we call ours the 21-point Solar MOT, £195) covers all of it.
Does solar panel maintenance matter in Bournemouth and Poole?
Yes. Panels have no moving parts, but the inverter, DC connectors, isolators and roof fixings all age, and the Dorset coast adds salt, gulls and shade. A yearly inspection catches small faults while they are cheap and protects the generation you paid for.
The maths is simple. A loose DC connection is a modest fix in year one. Left to arc for two years it can take an inverter with it, and the Energy Saving Trust puts an inverter replacement at around £800. Nobody enjoys paying for the second outcome when the first was available.
Maintenance also protects the paperwork side. If your system sits under the Feed-in Tariff, payments follow what your generation meter records. A system quietly running at 80% costs you twice: once in the lost electricity, once in the lost tariff. Our full guide to Feed-in Tariff systems in 2026 goes through what to check.
What does a solar panel service in Bournemouth actually involve?
A proper service means an engineer on site, not a remote glance at an app. It covers a full electrical test, a mounting and fixings check, inverter diagnostics and a performance review, finished with a written report. Ours is graded red, amber or green, and you get it the same day.
Here is why the on-site part matters. Monitoring apps tell you how much you generated. They do not tell you why a string is down 12%, whether an isolator is running hot, or whether the rail clamps on the north-west slope have started to weep rust. Those need someone with the right test equipment and a ladder.
The traffic-light grading is there so you can act without needing to be an electrician. Green means leave it. Amber means book the fix this season. Red means a safety or generation problem that should not wait. Our Solar MOT page shows what a report looks like.

How does the coast affect solar panels in Poole and Sandbanks?
Salt is the main difference. Prevailing south-westerlies carry salt-laden air across Poole Harbour and the open coast, and it settles on glass, frames and fixings. Salt film cuts light a little, but the real damage is slower: it attacks aluminium frames, stainless fixings that are not quite stainless enough, and electrical terminals.
Our own Poole guidance puts visible corrosion on aluminium frames and mounting hardware at four to six years on the harshest harbour-side roofs, and says salt spray reaches inland as far as Broadstone. Treat that as a worst case rather than a rule. Plenty of roofs a street back look fine for much longer, and we don't have a tidy explanation for why two neighbours' systems can age so differently. Aspect, wind exposure and the quality of the original fixings all play a part.
The practical advice is boring. On BH13 (Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs), BH14 (Lower Parkstone, Lilliput) and BH15 (Poole town, Hamworthy), check fixings and frames every year, and don't wait for the visible rust.
Do gulls and birds damage solar panels in Bournemouth?
They can. Herring gulls and feral pigeons nest in the warm gap under panels, and the result is droppings on the glass, chewed cable insulation and blocked airflow. The fix is bird-proofing mesh around the panel perimeter, and it works best fitted before the birds arrive.
Here is the part people miss: you cannot just clear an active nest. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to damage or destroy a wild bird's nest while it is in use, and herring gulls are a protected species. That means the right time to proof a roof is autumn and winter, when nothing is nesting. If gulls gave you trouble last spring, autumn is the time to have it done.
Mesh is also much cheaper than the alternative. Cable damage under panels can mean a string fault, and a string fault means a call-out. If you already have birds nesting, call us and we will tell you what can lawfully be done.
How often should Bournemouth and Poole solar panels be serviced?
Once a year for most coastal systems. Newer systems under three years old can stretch that if the commissioning report was clean and you watch the generation. Systems past eight years should not skip, because that is when connectors loosen and inverters start to wear.
The key takeaway: on this coast, the question isn't whether to service a solar system but whether the inverter will outlast the service interval. From year eight, assume it might not.
How much does solar panel maintenance cost in Bournemouth?
A one-off Solar MOT is £195, fixed. Cleaning typically runs £4 to £15 per panel according to Which?, and an inverter replacement is around £800 according to the Energy Saving Trust. Our Care plans spread the cost at £16.99, £29.99 or £44.99 a month.
A ten-panel roof therefore costs roughly £40 to £150 to clean. Care Pro includes an annual professional panel clean, which the plans page values at £150 or more. Care Plus adds an annual on-site health check, a full electrical test and a written report. Care takes 20% off standard call-out rates and Care Plus takes 30%. The plans page has the full list. For a closer look at the numbers, see our solar panel maintenance cost guide.
Can I clean my own solar panels?
You can, but please don't go on the roof. Which? notes that a heavy rainstorm usually washes off most dirt, and for most Dorset roofs that is enough. Where cleaning does help is under gull perches, beneath overhanging trees and on low-pitched arrays where dirt sits.
If you do clean, do it from the ground with a soft brush on an extension pole and plain water. Pressure washers can force water past seals, so avoid them. Never use abrasive pads, and never clean in direct summer sun, because cold water on hot glass is a bad idea.
Roof access is the real risk. A wet slate roof with a ladder leaning on a gutter is how people end up in A&E. A professional clean on a coastal roof is partly about safety and partly about not scratching the glass.
Which Bournemouth and Poole areas do you cover?
We cover Bournemouth (BH1 to BH11), Poole (BH12 to BH18), Christchurch (BH23, where our office is), Wimborne and the wider Dorset and Hampshire area. Poole has same-week availability, and emergency call-outs are usually attended within 24 to 48 hours.
Poole breaks down by postcode like this: BH12 covers Parkstone and Branksome, BH13 Sandbanks and Canford Cliffs, BH14 Lower Parkstone and Lilliput, BH15 Poole town and Hamworthy, BH16 Upton and Lytchett, BH17 Creekmoor and Canford Heath, and BH18 Broadstone. Plan members pay no call-out fee on our Poole service.
One thing that sets us apart from most servicing firms is that we install as well. We are MCS certified, and the engineers who fit your system are the ones who come back to service it. Local detail is on our Poole and Christchurch pages.

Frequently asked questions
How often should solar panels be serviced in Dorset?
Once a year for most systems, and annually without exception once a system passes eight years old. Coastal salt, gulls and tree shade make Dorset slightly harder on equipment than inland sites. A younger system with a clean commissioning report can stretch to every other year if you watch the monitoring.
My app shows normal generation. Do I still need a service?
Possibly not this year. Apps show totals, not causes, and a single faulty string can hide behind good weather. If the system is under five years old and generation matches last year's, you can reasonably skip a year. Over eight years, we would not.
What does the Solar MOT report look like?
It is a written report with traffic-light grading, delivered the same day as the inspection. Each finding is marked green, amber or red, with a plain description of what we found and what to do about it, so you can act without needing electrical knowledge.
How quickly can you attend a fault in Poole?
We offer same-week availability across Poole, and emergency call-outs are usually attended within 24 to 48 hours. Most issues are resolved in that window. Care Pro plan members get two emergency call-outs a year included.
Do I need my panels cleaned in Bournemouth?
Often not. Rain washes off most dirt. Clean when your output drops without a technical fault, or when you can see droppings, moss or a salt film that rain isn't shifting. Cleaning typically costs £4 to £15 per panel, according to Which?.
Do you service systems that someone else installed?
Our Poole service covers inverter diagnostics, fault clearance and repairs across all major inverter brands. Tell us the make, model and age of your system when you book and we will confirm it is something we can inspect.
The short version
A solar system on the Dorset coast is a good asset that ages faster than most owners expect. Book the inspection, read the report, fix the amber, and the next ten years should be dull. Dull is what you want.
